What We Value in an Applicant

The core values of our residency program mirror those of our department: collaboration, service, compassion, resilience, collegiality, adaptability, leadership, innovation, diversity, and inclusion.

Our department’s mission is to transform healthcare for all by advancing EM through innovation and scientific discovery.

We are looking for applicants who not only excel clinically but also embody our core values through their activities both inside and outside of the clinical environment. We also seek applicants who have demonstrated a track record of scholarship through peer-reviewed publications, regional/national presentations, project leadership, and innovation.

What We Ask of an Applicant

Each student is expected to submit at least one SLOE.

We recognize the value of experiencing EM outside of a single institution, and we likewise prioritize equity and equal access to away rotations. Students should upload a SLOE from any additional completed EM rotation.

Application Review

At the Stanford Emergency Medicine Residency Program, we take pride in our holistic review process. We do not utilize filters, and every application is reviewed by one of our program leaders. Our first interview date is scheduled for 10/17/2023, so with this in mind, we will be releasing our first interview invites on 10/13/2023. We will continue to offer interviews on a rolling basis throughout the interview season.

Will Supplemental Program Signaling be used? If so, how?
For the 2024 ERAS cycle, our program will be participating in Supplemental Program Signaling. While completion of the standard MyERAS application is a requirement, Program Signaling is optional. We will abide by the AAMC ERAS code of conduct around Program Signaling, and we will use these only in pre-interview decisions. For students with more questions about the Supplemental Program Signaling process, please visit this website.

Should I notify the program of updates to my application?
Our program will run an ERAS update every 4 days through 1/17/2023 to capture new uploads to your application, and you do not need to contact our program directly to notify us of updates to your ERAS application.

Do you participate in the third party token program?
We do not participate in the third party token program.

I am an IMG or from an orphan program, therefore do not have an EM SLOE. Will you still consider my application?
We understand that IMGs and medical students without a home Emergency Medicine rotation may not be able to obtain an EM SLOE therefore the application will still be considered.

Do I need USMLE Step 1 and 2 to apply to your program?
We require a passing Step 1 score to consider you for an interview and a passing Step 2 score in order to place you on our rank list. You should plan to have these results no later than the 3rd week of January.

Do you consider applicants that have already completed previous training?
Yes, please submit your application through ERAS and we will review your application in its entirety.

How do you handle visas?
We review each applicants' situation thoroughly and handle them on a case by case basis.
