Our physician-researchers receive funding from federal, foundation, and institutional resources. They also benefit from specially-trained research support staff.
At Stanford University’s Department of Emergency Medicine, pursuing knowledge is a collaborative effort. An ecosystem of resources propels faculty, fellows, and residents to advance innovation, and attendings benefit from a reduced clinical shift load that enables them to engage in research.
Research is further aided by our Stanford Emergency Medicine Partnership Program (STEPP) and Clinical Research Unit, and our Data Analytics Committee. Scroll down to learn more!
Funding Sources
Since 2019, Stanford Department of Emergency Medicine has received 153 grants from federal, non-federal, university, and industry sources.
Funding Amounts
Since 2019, Stanford Department of Emergency Medicine has received more than $45.3 million in research funding from federal, foundation, and seed grant sources.
Stanford EM Partnership Program (STEPP)
STEPP connects Stanford Emergency Medicine with select external innovators through a structured application process led by EM physicians with deep expertise in innovation and clinical care.
Most applicants come from industry-funded teams working in areas like medical devices, digital health, AI, home care, and remote monitoring. After an initial screening, top candidates undergo an in-depth interview with faculty experts to assess mission fit, clinical relevance, and business viability—modeled after venture capital evaluations.
Fewer than 6% are accepted. Those who are gain access to Stanford’s physician-researchers for ongoing guidance and study support. The program prioritizes high-impact collaborations, especially with emerging companies offering promising solutions in acute care. Learn more
Clinical Research Unit
Stanford Emergency Medicine’s Clinical Research Unit supports precision medicine studies in adult and pediatric emergency settings.
The CRU helps researchers navigate every phase of human subjects research—from protocol development and IRB submissions to patient enrollment and workflow implementation—while ensuring patient safety and data integrity.
A dedicated team of a research manager and four coordinators partners with hospital departments, trains staff, and supports day-to-day study operations. By working across multiple studies, the team identifies opportunities for collaboration and helps avoid common pitfalls.
ED Data Analytics Committee
The Emergency Department Data Analytics Committee (EDAC) is employing informatics to improve care delivery through research, quality monitoring, and machine learning.
Comprised of emergency medicine physicians with informatics expertise, a clinical data architect, and a data analyst, the team guides emergency medicine clinical operations and researchers in utilizing patient data in innovative ways.
Specialized Support Staff
Our team provides hands-on support for grant applications, budgeting, reporting, and project management—helping researchers navigate federal, industry, and seed funding opportunities with ease. A streamlined intake process quickly identifies administrative needs, allowing investigators to stay focused on discovery.
We work closely with Stanford’s Research Management Group to clear institutional hurdles and with the Quantitative Sciences Unit, a 40+ member team of data experts, for advanced analytics support. Additional partnerships include the ED Data Analytics Committee, which leverages informatics, AI, and machine learning to improve care and conduct research.
Resources include scientific writing workshops, an annual two-day research course for fellows, medical editor consultations, and data assistance. Our internal intranet centralizes tools and guidance on funding, writing, publishing, IRB processes, and more.
