Adult & Pediatric Emergency Departments

Our patients arrive by ambulance; the Stanford Life Flight and CalStar helicopters; private physician office and clinic referrals; and via walk-in service. Patients are seen in order of priority with the sickest seen first to prevent any worsening of their condition. If a patient has a private physician, we strive to contact that physician to provide information and updates whenever appropriate.

As a top-level teaching institution, Stanford is on the cutting edge of medical technology and advances. We routinely have student physicians and residents-in-training working in the emergency department, always closely supervised by fully-trained attending emergency physicians.

Adult Emergency Department

The Marc and Laura Andreessen Adult Emergency Department at Stanford serves the San Mateo and Santa Clara County communities and receives 75k visits per year.

It is our goal to provide efficient, high-quality emergency care, both in the emergency department and throughout the community.

The Stanford emergency department is also an integral part of the ground-breaking Emergency Cardiac Care and Stroke services offered by Stanford Hospital.

Pediatric Emergency Department

Stanford's Marc and Laura Andreessen Pediatric Emergency Department is committed to child-centered care that creates an atmosphere of comfort for our most vulnerable population. The Pediatric Emergency Department of Stanford Hospital also serves as the emergency treatment facility for Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford

We offer comprehensive 24-hour emergency care that includes direct access to world-ranked pediatric specialists. Our new "ouchless" pediatric ED is separate from our adult ED and our physicians are also Stanford School of Medicine faculty, representing some of the most innovative minds, trained in leading-edge best practices.

Santa Clara County has recognized Stanford’s pediatric emergency department as a comprehensive care center for its ability to handle a broad spectrum of medical emergencies in young patients.
