Patient Care

General Emergency Medicine

The Marc and Laura Andreessen Emergency Department website

The Marc and Laura Andreessen Emergency Department at Stanford (Stanford ED) is a full service emergency care facility; treating the entire spectrum of ages, illnesses and injuries. For the year 2014 the Stanford ED treated almost 56,000 patients. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and we care for all patients in need of our services without regard to race, religion, gender or ability to pay.

The Emergency Physicians at Stanford have access to the full spectrum of diagnostic modalities and capabilities currently available for the evaluation and emergent treatment of patients in our department. Further, our staff have access to a wide array of specialists and sub-specialists to aid in caring for our patient population. We strive to provide the best possible care in the fastest fashion possible.

Patients who present to the Stanford ED are first seen by a specially trained triage nurse who assesses their problems and then prioritizes (triages) them according to the apparent severity of their illness or injury. Patients are seen in order of priority with the sickest people seen first in order to prevent any worsening of their condition.

We receive patients by multiple routes – Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ambulances; the Stanford Life Flight and CalStar helicopters; private physician office and clinic referrals; and via walk-in service.

The Stanford ED has been designated by the American College of Surgeons as a Level I Trauma Center. This is the highest possible designation and indicates that the Stanford ED has all the capabilities to handle any trauma patient, no matter how severely injured. In 2014, the Emergency Department and Trauma Service treated approximately 2500 victims of major trauma.

The Stanford ED is in the midst of developing an enhanced Pediatric Emergency Medicine program in order to provide the best care possible to our youngest patients and their families. This includes a completely redesigned emergency care space built to be as “kid & family-friendly” as possible. We have also hired specialists in Pediatric Emergency Medicine (physicians, nurses, child life specialists) to help lead this program. The department has been surveyed by the County of Santa Clara and found to have all of the necessary equipment and personnel to handle any emergency that might befall a child.

The Stanford ED is also an integral part of the Emergency Cardiac Care and Stroke services offered by Stanford Hospital and Clinics. This means that we are always ready to quickly intervene when a patient presents with an acute heart attack or stroke.

Once a patient’s evaluation is completed in our ED, if they have a private physician, we strive to contact that physician to give them an update on that patient’s status whenever appropriate.

As a top level teaching institution, Stanford is on the cutting edge of medical technology and advances. We routinely have student physicians and residents-in-training working in the ED, and always closely supervised by fully trained attending emergency physicians who see every patient that comes through our doors.

All of our attending emergency physicians have a passion for what we do and are actively involved in service projects such as medical mission trips to developing nations, provision of care to law enforcement personnel in our region, provision of direction and education to Emergency Medical Services providers, and participating in fund raising activities for important agencies.

In summary, it is our goal and desire to provide the public that comes to us for help, with expeditious high quality emergency care. We hope that you and your family never need our services, but should that ever be the case, we trust that your experience will be the best possible and we pledge to give you our best.
