Current Research Activities

My overall research interest is understanding and evaluating health care outcomes for PEM systems and improving access and quality of care for poor children and their families who come to the PED.

Current Projects
  1. Multi-site study of patient safety in emergency departments, with EMNet. August 2003-present. (Don Schreiber, SED residents: Alicia Chiao, Renee Hsia, Suzanne Miller)

  2. The Impact of an Emergency Department-Based Educational Intervention on Pediatric Asthma Outcomes. A randomized, controlled pilot study. May 2003-present. (in conjunction with Prasanna Ananth, Med student; funded by medical scholars program; SED resident: Ketan Patel; Peds resident: Scott Auerbach)

  3. Family Advocacy Program: A Medical-Legal Collaborative to Improve the Health of Low-income Patients. In conjunction with Dr Weintraub, General Pediatrics and Melissa Rodgers, Legal Council San Mateo County. Oct 2003-present.

  4. Pediatric Emergency Medicine Follow-up Compliance, July 2002 – present. Conducted with a Stanford Medical Student as part of a Medical Scholars project. Looks at follow-up compliance in Pediatric Emergency Medicine population. Identifies predictors of non-compliance with follow-up.
