Continuing Medical Education (CME)

The Division of Emergency Medicine offered a National Symposium on Emergency Medicine and Acute Care Conference annually from 1994 - 2010. It became one of the largest national emergency medicine meetings; second only to the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Annual Scientific Assembly in scope and attendance. The meeting was held in Hawaii each spring, and rotated between Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

Currently no future symposiums are planned for the coming year. Check back in the future for further updates and CME opportunities.

Symposium 2008

The course objective was to present, and to critically assess, recent advances in Emergency Medicine and Acute Care. It was intended to enhance the clinical practices of Emergency and other Primary Care Physicians, and to better prepare them for their careers by providing state-of-the-art information on key clinical, scientific and administrative topics.

In addition to Stanford faculty, renowned experts, who are leaders in their field, have been recruited from other academic centers. Although the topics changed annually, each year the course emphasized newer therapeutic and diagnostic modalities, literature reviews, and in-depth assessment of the latest clinical controversies.

A variety of interactive, hands-on workshops, such as Advanced Airway Skills, Advanced Orthopedic Skills and Ultrasound Guided Procedures, complimented plenary session lectures. Participants had the opportunity to learn comprehensive bedside ultrasound skills in a special pre-conference all day seminar. This intensive session utilized a series of didactic, workshop and skill stations with live models to prepare the registrant to perform and to interpret bedside ultrasonography.

Future meetings will include an educational track featuring summaries and commentary of the articles chosen by ABEM for it Life Long Learning and Self-Assessment tests.

The Mission of the Stanford Symposium of Emergency Medicine has been:

  1. To provide a mechanism for facilitating continual and meaningful faculty development and p rofessional growth for Stanford Emergency Medicine faculty and residents.
  2. To promote the Stanford Division of Emergency Medicine as a leader in Emergency Medicine.
