| Continuing Medical Education (CME)The Division of Emergency Medicine has been offering a National Symposium on Emergency Medicine and Acute Care Conference annually since 1994. It has become one of the largest national emergency medicine meetings, second only to the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Annual Scientific Assembly in scope and attendance. The meeting is held in Hawaii each spring, and typically rotates between Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. The course objective is to present, and to critically assess, recent advances in Emergency Medicine and Acute Care. It is intended to enhance the clinical practices of Emergency and other Primary Care Physicians, and to better prepare them for their careers by providing state-of-the-art information on key clinical, scientific and administrative topics. In addition to Stanford faculty, renowned experts, who are leaders in their field, are recruited from other academic centers. Although the topics change annually, each year the course emphasizes newer therapeutic and diagnostic modalities, literature reviews, and in-depth assessment of the latest clinical controversies. A variety of interactive, hands-on workshops, such as Advanced Airway Skills, Advanced Orthopedic Skills and Ultrasound Guided Procedures, compliment plenary session lectures. Participants also have the opportunity to learn comprehensive bedside ultrasound skills in a special pre-conference all day seminar. This intensive session utilizes a series of didactic, workshop and skill stations with live models to prepare the registrant to perform and to interpret bedside ultrasonography. Future meetings will include an educational track featuring summaries and commentary of the articles chosen by ABEM for it Life Long Learning and Self-Assessment tests.
