Partnership for Prescription Assistance

In an effort to help patients access their prescription medicines through patient assistance programs, America's pharmaceutical research companies launched the Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA) in April 2005. The PPA is a central clearinghouse that connects low-income, uninsured and underinsured patients to more than 475 public and private patient assistance programs, including more than 180 programs offered by pharmaceutical companies. Since its launch, the PPA has helped more than three million patients find programs, many of which provide medicines for free or nearly free.

In addition to helping patients find assistance programs, the PPA can connect patients with free health clinics and healthcare providers in their communities. Since the creation of the free health clinic database, the PPA has provided information to more than 80,000 patients. Healthcare providers can direct their patients to the PPA's easy-to-use website (www.pparx.org) or the toll-free number (1-888-4PPA-NOW) where trained operators field calls in more than 150 languages.

More than 1,300 national, state and local organizations, including the American Academy of Family Physicians, American College of Emergency Physicians, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, United Way of America, and the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, have partnered with America's pharmaceutical research companies to support the PPA.
